Gender in Practice: Study of Lawyers' Lives

Gender in Practice: Study of Lawyers' Lives Gender in Practice demonstrates and explains how the structure of legal practice has changed in recent decades, often to the disadvantage of women. The issues addressed here, such as conflicts between careers and family, departures from practice, and barriers to women's promotions and earnings are of great importance to members of the profession. Looking at the careers of both men and women and using information culled from two surveys that include nearly two thousand lawyers, this revealing book traces occupational and personal experiences and analyzes these patterns in terms of work and gender. The findings are linked to practical proposals for change, some of which have already found a place in the profession. A major contribution to discussions of sexual equality in the legal workplace, Gender in Practice offers detailed insights into the current and future status of women in the law. Lawyers, law professors, and anyone concerned with gender inequality and equal rights will find this to be an interesting and informative work.

Sex Radicals and the Quest for Women's Equality

By Buy.com

Questioning the commonplace view of the late nineteenth century as a period of passionless women and so-called Victorian sexuality, this study examines the spread of sex radical thought and notions of free love through American society in the second half of the nineteenth century. During this period a grass-roots movement of women and men, uncomfortable with the social, economic, and political inequalities they saw as inherent to the institution of marriage, participated in frank discussions about the relationship between sexuality and women's rights. In charting the growth of the sex radical movement, Joanne E. Passet draws on a host of documents from the period--letters, periodicals, lectures, and pamphlets--to establish a strong link between the rise of print culture and the freedom of citizens, especially women, to build geographically dispersed communities of ideas. She also advances models of sexuality that challenge the restrictive mores of society at large and shows that the majority of correspondents who participated in the sex radical movement resided in the Midwest and the Great Plains states, where ideas of individual freedom and sovereignty resonated particularly strongly. Passet vividly demonstrates how this sex radical movement laid the foundations upon which later generations of women's rights crusaders and feminists would build, placing discussions of sex and sexuality squarely in the public arena.

Understanding Gender and Organizations

Understanding Gender and Organizations Gender underpins contemporary organizational structure and practice, but is often relegated to the margins of mainstream organization theory. This volume provides a comprehensive, gendered perspective on organizational life. MatsAlvesson and Yvonne Due Billing demonstrate that a gendered perspective provides important insights into the actions of men and women in organizations and, as a result, the characteristics of organizations as a whole. Considering the complex and contradictory nature of gender relations, Alvesson and Billing argue for an organizational analysis that is sensitive to conflicts, ambiguity and local diversity.

Women in the New Asia: From Pain to Power

Women in the New Asia: From Pain to Power What impact has the rapid economic development of Asia had on women? Why is Asia still home to the largest number of impoverished women? How does the feminization of poverty, one of the most urgent issues facing the continent, actually take place ?This remarkable book charts the effects of the economic boom on women across Asia. The author, one of Japan's leading journalists, demonstrates how Asian women are confronting rapid economic development which is accompanied by widespread infringement of human rights. Analysing the lives of women in Japan, Thailand, the Phillipinnes, Taiwan, China, Nepal and Korea, Yayori Matsui explores the impact of globalization - including the feminization of migration and an increase in the trafficking of women sexual violence - from the 'comfort' women to child prostitution development projects - the cause of mass deforestation and displacement of communities However she also describes women's credit co-ops, democratization movements and unionization of women workers. She meets women who have organized anti-logging blockades, literacy classes and campaigns against trafficking. She finds women across Asia resisting the dictatorship of development, the feminization of poverty and patriarchal values. Throughout the continent, she finds the seeds of hope for a new Asia.

Wildscience: Reading Feminism, Medicine and the Media

Everyday viewers are confronted with shocking news reports and sensational images about DNA and cloning, the fight against AIDS, cancer and depression.TV stations such as Lifetime currently devote entire programs to women's health and popular sitcoms are now dealing with issues like mammograms, breast cancer and hormone replacement therapy.Wild Science investigates this worldwide boom in health culture. The book helps to explain how popular culture-the principal channel by which the non-scientific community understands illness-implicates national health policies and effects medical research funding. This innovative and controversial volume reveals the new technologies which make the human body into a virtual territory; popular representations of genetics and identity, the diagnostic and medical practices centered around women's bodies, and debates around the practice of 'feminist science studies'.Wild Science attempts to aim our attention at the visual culture of medicine, exploring the power of popular representations over our expectations in everything from the Visible Human Project to the supposed existence of a 'gay gene' to medical abortion. The book argues that science is an everyday practice bound in values and institutions, and calls for a responsible engagement with the public cultures of science and health.

The Limits of Medicine

By Buy.com

What are the final limits of medicine What should we not try to cure medically, even if we had the necessary financial resources and technology This book philosophically addresses these questions by examining two mirror-image debates in tandem. Members of certain groups, who are deemed by traditional standards to have a medical condition, such as deafness, obesity, or anorexia, argue that they have created their own cultures and ways of life. Curing their conditions would be a form of genocide. Members of other groups are seeking to provide medical treatment to what would conventionally be deemed 'cultural conditions'. Mild neurotics who take anti-depressants to elevate their mood, runners who use steroids, or men and women seeking cosmetic surgery are asking for medical treatment for problems that might be solved culturally, by changing norms, pressures, or expectations in the broader culture. Each of these two debates endeavors to locate medicine's final frontier and to articulate what it is that we should not treat medically even if we could. This volume analyzes what these two contemporary debates have to say to each other and thus offers a new way of determining medicine's final limits.

Order Against Marriage

Against Marriage

In seventeenth-century France, aristocratic women were valued by their families as commodities to be married off in exchange for money, social advantage, or military alliance. Once married, they became legally subservient to their husbands. The duchesse de Montpensier--a first cousin of Louis XIV--was one of very few exceptions, thanks to the vast wealth she inherited from her mother, who died shortly after Montpensier was born. She was also one of the few politically powerful women in France at the time to have been an accomplished writer. In the daring letters presented in this bilingual edition, Montpensier condemns the alliance system of marriage, proposing instead to found a republic that she would govern, a corner of the world in which . . . women are their own mistresses, and where marriage and even courtship would be outlawed. Her pastoral utopia would provide medical care and vocational training for the poor, and all the homes would have libraries and studies, so that each woman would have a room of her own in which to write books. Joan DeJean's lively introduction and accessible translation of Montpensier's letters--four previously unpublished--allow us unprecedented access to the courageous voice of this extraordinary woman.

Human Insecurity: Global Structures of Violence
Human Insecurity is concerned with our refusal to confront the millions of avoidable deaths of women and children each year. Those missing millions are rarely the subject of conventional security studies, yet such avoidable deaths are a vital part of the notion of ''security'' more broadly understood. The book argues that such deaths are caused by the man-made structures of neoliberalism and andrarchy and argues that the debate on human security can be reinvigorated by looking at the unarmed, civilian role in causing the deaths of millions of innocent people; from child deaths from preventable disease to honour killings.
